The weather was dreary, my SLR was broken and I processed all the iPhone pictures with a filter that makes us look jaundiced BUT… we still had fun at a local fair.
Not pictured: the guy at the bottom making this out of sand. SAND!
Ordinarily the kitsch and general bizarro-world of fairs and carnivals are my absolute favorite places to take pictures: some of my favorite photographs are from one of our Coney Island adventures. Not having my real camera for this trip was a bummer, but hey, at least I was present and not saying, “Wait wait wait wait WAIT. Hold on. Let me just take a picture of this. And that. And OOOOoo!!! Look over there!”.

Yeah. This little sweet potato broke my heart a little, and I just stood there staring at her and talking to her like an insane person for quite a while. Animals at places like this make me horribly depressed: I’ve mentioned that in previous posts after trips to petting zoos. This gorgeous girl looked well taken care of, though, so I didn’t cause a ruckus and start yelling at anyone… this time.
As we walked out the front gate after a full day of gorging on fried things and kicking ass at water gun races, I waved goodbye and shouted, “Bye fair! See you next year!”.
Pete looked at me in horror and I said, “What? Did you think this was a one time thing? Welcome to parenthood. You might as well enjoy the fried dough and pig races while they last because before we know it, she’ll be coming to places like this with her boyfriend.”.
Eep!

those are just with your phone? I’m impressed. I think something’s wrong w/ my iphone camera. it’s just being a douche.
Love the elephant pic, and pig races? stop it.
Come on, of course I had to stay for the pig race! We didn’t have those growing up on Lawn Guyland.
Anyone can take magical iPhone pics if they filter and process them to death in Camera+ and Camera Awesome. Huzzah for technology!
I love these shots and the coloring. The one you have on Instagram with the elephant just made me swoon. I love how the colors and lines are deepened and made that beautiful creature even more beautiful. Looks like a fun time! (btw this is Momofthreeunder on Instagram).
How gorgeous is that elephant? I could have taken pictures of her all day- I wish I could have gotten closer to take shots of her soulful eyes and long lashes. So amazing.
Oh I LOVE fair pictures. They are always just a bit deranged looking (except for the kid ones of course
) I cannot believe that first one is made from sand. Amazing.
Fair pics are always mildly creepy- that’s why I love’em! ha!
Beautiful pictures Tracy! Looks like LJ had a great time! I love the fair at Topsfield! So jealous that I will be missing it this year. And that elephant totally took my breath away! What a beautiful animal!
Thanks, mama!
I love the tone of those pics. I think it looks just a little otherworldly, perfect for a fair!
It’s the crazytown, old time-y filter on Camera+! (Not really, but that’s what it should be called!)
This does look like it was a fun event. I know what you mean about the animals making you sad. I know my critters wouldn’t be happy cooped up in a small place. They do, however, love the attention they get from visitors to our farm.
I am so jealous that you even live on a farm and have critters!!
That looks like so much fun! The sand sculpture is AMAZING. And phone camera or not, all your shots are incredible!
Waiting for the Bus on Picture Day
Too fun. When you wrote of fried things — I smelled funnel cakes! Oh to have one right now. You daughter is too precious with those blond curls. And that elephant. What a wonderful photo. I understand about feeling sad. When we went to Sea World and saw that beautiful orca swimming out in that tank with his drooping dorsal fin, I got all teary. Was glad that I was wearing sunglasses. And last thought of this mega comment, my camera got messed up at the beach and I farted around getting it fixed. My son’s graduation from high school last May snuck up on me and I was taking pictures from the stands with my iPhone. Curses!
I love your fair pictures – ours is going on right now, too. My girls are going this weekend, and it’s the first time I’m skipping it. But I hope everyone shows me pictures!
Beautiful! The sane people are the ones that talk to animals…and I’m not just saying that because I talk to animals all the time. Really.
Looks like a wonderful time! I really REALLY miss having a regular camera. Mine broke quite some time ago and I just haven’t had the funds to fix it. The phone is better than nothing but I still miss a real camera.
These are awesome pictures! And I totally get that about the “hey wait, let me take a picture first” thing. It’s a delicate balance, enjoying family time and capturing it. It’s hard, but it looks like you did well!
Ack! Boyfriends! Teenagers!
Love the one that you see just her eyes over the rail, with the gallery in the back – fantastic!!!
Despite you not having your camera with you, your pics are GREAT! I especially love the one with the elephant! You really captured what fun the fair must have been! (Visiting from #iPPP)
